šŸ“ˆ Do The Unscalable

Incorrectly build your businessā€™ foundation & it will tip over once it gets bigger.

We as entrepreneurs often get so caught up in thinking about the scalable thing to do, that we kill off potential success.

This doesnā€™t scaleā€¦

But does it need to? Your company is still in startup mode.

You need to be in the trenches, doing the direct sales to get your business off the ground.

You need to start with the unscalable.

šŸ’³ Stripe & The Collison Install

Stripe, the global online payment processor, is founded by two brothers. Patrick & John.

In the companyā€™s early days, the brothers would personally help their users integrate the system.

There is an early story about the Collison brothers building Stripe, where they were talking to other entrepreneurs in Y Combinator, a startup accelerator, and an entrepreneur would say ā€œWe need to get payments figured out, we havenā€™t done that yet.ā€

And the brothers would literally get their laptops out on the spot and be like ā€œWe can help you with that right now!ā€ And install Stripe to their site right then & there.

Patrick & Johnā€™s hands-on approach became a memorable one, so much so, that theyā€™ve called it The Collison Install.

The Collisons were in the trenches, directly setting up the software for their customers. This process has helped them learn rapidly, iterate effectively, and also build a loyal client-base from the get-go.

They developed this tactic to be like, ā€œOh well, you know, l'm in the neighborhood. Iā€™ll drop by your office to help you implement Stripe.ā€

It was a little awkward, but they would not go away until you finished the implementation of Stripe.

šŸ”‘ Key Take Away

Don't shy away from unscalable efforts.

These personal touches and direct engagements provide critical learning experiences and will lay the foundation for future scalability.

šŸ“ˆ Do The Unscalable

Entrepreneurs get obsessed with scalability.

> How do I automate this?
> How do I remove myself from the process?
> How do I make money passively?

But if youā€™re still in startup mode, scaling too soon is a mistake.

Therefore I want to encourage you to start regardless of it being scalable or not.

You need to build a solid base and understand your customers deeply now. And figuring out a way to make it scalable later.

Because if you incorrectly build your businessā€™ foundation, it will easily tip over once it gets bigger.

šŸ‘ž Action Step

Start doing that thing youā€™re avoiding because ā€œitā€™s unscalable.ā€

The trick is to do things that donā€™t scaleā€”until you can't anymore."

Do Things That Donā€™t Scale - Paul Graham

In the early days of your business, your job isnā€™t to automateā€”itā€™s to learn, adapt, and build relationships.

The fastest-growing startups didnā€™t start with massive systems, They started with direct engagement, hands-on service, and hustle.

šŸŒŸ Epiphany

If youā€™re too focused on scaling from day one, you might never reach the point where scaling even matters.
