How to Protect Your Time and Focus on Building Your Business

My phone started vibrating. From the rhythm, I recognized it was an incoming caller. I pulled the phone out of my left pocket and saw it was my girlfriend, so I answered.

“Hey, my friend was wondering if you could make a website for her auntie, she could connect you, and you can discuss payment.”

I declined and told her I don’t make websites. 

Later that day my girlfriend asked me why I declined. “Isn’t it good to increase your clientele and make an extra buck?” She asked me.

Making more money is never a bad thing. Neither is expanding your clientele. But losing focus is.

There is power in saying ‘no’.
Let me explain why I rejected this offer 🙅🏽‍♂️

  1. I don’t make websites, I’m a marketer

  2. I’m not going to learn how to make websites

For the client, it would be them getting a website.

But for me, I would first need to have a discovery call with this prospect. Then see if I’d even want to work with them and see if they can pay me an amount I’m satisfied with.

If I’d accept, I’d need to do market research and find the right software & plan.

And since I don’t have the skills to make websites, I’d need to spend countless hours learning how to build the damn thing.

Yes, it’s good to increase your clientele & get your name out there while making a few bucks.

But that doesn’t mean you take every opportunity you get.

The cost of saying ‘yes’ was too expensive.
Even though I’d get paid for it.

P.S.
Let’s say hypothetically, I would accept that gig and spend a lot of time learning and doing something I don’t like for some money.

If she referred me to more people, they’d just want me to build even more websites.
